No matter what Pelosi misunderstood in the past about freedom and choice, her bishop clearly points out her mistake and error. So, she cannot fall back on that excuse anymore. Going forward though, what if she persists in her ways and continues to support or promote pro-abortion legislation and policies? Will her bishop discipline her with excommunication as required by Church law? If not, why? Addressing those who advocate for “reproductive choice” while claiming to be Catholic, Archbishop Niederauer emphasized, “it is entirely incompatible with Catholic teaching to conclude that our freedom of will justifies choices that are radically contrary to the Gospel—racism, infidelity, abortion, theft. Freedom of will is the capacity to act with moral responsibility; it is not the ability to determine arbitrarily what constitutes moral right.”
