On Saturday, October 30, 2010, the Opera Company of Philadelphia brought together over 650 choristers from 28 participating organizations to perform one of the Knight Foundation's "Random Acts of Culture" at Macy's in Center City Philadelphia. Accompanied by the Wanamaker Organ - the world's largest pipe organ - the OCP Chorus and throngs of singers from the community infiltrated the store as shoppers, and burst into a pop-up rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's "Messiah" at 12 noon, to the delight of surprised shoppers. November 23, 2010. Hours before the publication of the book “Light of the World” based on an interview with Benedict XVI, the Vatican newspaper has advanced some of the Pope's responses. His words on the use of condoms has provoked reactions worldwide. The Pope has said that “individual cases that are justified, for example when a prostitute uses a condom, and this can be the first step toward a moral sensitization, a first act of responsibility to develop once again the understanding of the fact that not everything is permitted, and that one cannot do whatever one wishes.”

Given the controversy this raises, the Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi, said Benedict XVI justifies the use of condoms only in exceptional situations where the exercise of sexuality represents a real danger to the life of another person by spreading AIDS.

According to the Pope, condom use in these cases may be “a primary responsibility,” and “a first step towards a more human sexuality.” And he cites the case of prostitution among men.

Also Benedict XVI recalled that condom use is equivalent to “trivializing sexuality” and “loses its meaning as an expression of love.”

Lombardi said the Pope “does not justify morally disordered exercise of sexuality” and recalled that “the Pope does not change the teaching of the Church on condoms."

On the contrary, it reaffirms its position by offering a perspective on the value and dignity of human sexuality as an expression of love and responsibility.

Another issue addressed in the book are sexual abuses by priests. Benedict XVI says he was not surprised at the existence of these cases because he personally took charge of this problem when he was a cardinal. However, he declared he did not know its extent, and that was for him a “huge shock.”

On the other hand, the Pope also says he would be willing to resign “if physically, mentally and spiritually he ceased to be able to perform” his official duties.

15 Promises of Mother Mary to those who pray the Rosary

Blessed Alan de la Roche and Dominic the Prussian, revived the Rosary during the last quarter of the 15th century, after a period of about 100 years where the Rosary had been forgotten.  Thousands were inspired by Bl. Pope allows condoms? Morality behind cooperation with evil.

Pope cites specific cases when condom use is justifiable.  It could be under the lesser evil approach to cooperation with evil.  If you know that an AIDS infected person cannot stop impregnating others, then it is a lesser evil to counsel that person to at least use a condom.  That doesn't mean that condom use is moral.  It is just a way to stop him for infecting others since he does not have the discipline to stop engaging in sex.  It's cutting a finger to save a hand.

The media coverage completely ignored the rest of the trip to Africa on account of a single statement. Someone had asked me why the Catholic Church adopts an unrealistic and ineffective position on AIDs. At that point, I really felt that I was being provoked, because the Church does more than anyone else. And I stand by that claim. Because she is the only institution that assists people up close and concretely, with prevention, education, help, counsel, and accompaniment. And because she is second to none in treating so many AIDs victims, especially children with AIDs.

"Catholic moral tradition elaborates four basic principles that help us navigate a morally complex world. Each of these principles involves varying degrees of cooperation with evil. The principles are (1) double effect, in which a single action has two foreseen effects—one “good” and intended, the other “evil” and tolerated, such as the removal of the fetus in an ectopic pregnancy to save the life of the mother; (2) tolerance, in which we judge, following the Gospel principle of the wheat and the tares, that certain evils must be endured for the time being lest a greater evil ensue from our efforts to weed out the malefactors, such as tolerating legal abortion even if we disagree that this should be the case; (3) compromise, in which we in some way actively participate in actions or sinful social structures that have a clear morally evil component, such as purchasing goods made under exploitative labor conditions in foreign sweatshops; and (4) the lesser of two evils, such as counseling the use of clean needles among drug addicts." I have 3 miscarried children.  This confirms my belief that they live and I shall meet them someday.  I try not to forget and listing them here will help as my memory fades with age.  My supposed second child died after my wife complained of pain.  Another was expelled while she was at the toilet.  I remember wanting to scoop the remains and baptise him.  The third was found dead during the sonogram.  I remember the doctor saying, "There's no heartbeat."  It took a few seconds before the reality hit me and when it did, I felt like collapsing on the floor.  This is not a popular topic in the US culture specially when many want to even deny the fact that unborn children are really people.  But this video makes the memory of my dead children bittersweet.  The loss in painful but the fact that I have 3 other children waiting for me in heaven makes it sweet.

After the elections, the dust settled, the darkness has been dispelled by light and everything is out in the open.  Politics brought out the best and worst.  What follows is a stark revelation where light shined more brightly when contrasted with darkness or the dark becomes apparent when juxtaposed with the light.  A seemingly normal comment by one becomes diabolical when put in context with another's.


Despite the Church's contradiction to Obama's policies, the community sees him as an opponent in the public square but not as a enemy.   Archbishop Chaput cautioned pro-lifers against hating their adversaries. “Our adversary is an opponent, but never our "enemy." On the other hand, Obama, who claims to be a Christian too, branded his opponents as enemies deserving of punishment. (Speaking of which, he also considers an unexpected child as a punishment (another enemy?)  deserving of death by abortion.) By his words, he has unmasked himself i.e. that is not WWJD.

There are many who would destroy this place we have fought so hard to safe-guard. I have friends who live in countries where they cannot even draw a cartoon, or speak in humor or protest against their sovereigns, which has given me an even deeper appreciation for the rights and liberties we hold self evident.

Being a patriot does not mean we can't question those in authority ... in fact ... we'd be less than patriotic if we didn't. Thank God, I live in a country I can do just that.
We have traversed the bigotries and rhetoric of generations past ... and the past need be learned from as not to be repeated. It (the pain and moral evils) also need be put to rest in order that a great nation can continue to move forward with it's manifest destiny.
My heritage in America includes Cherokee, as well as British, Irish, German, Dutch and others, who immigrated here searching for liberty and the prosperity they could not find in their homelands. I am proud to be an American!

Revealing stats about blog posts

I finally got the blogger stats function to work and it was revealing. It showed what people wanted and made me think of what my blogging is about.

Top of the list is sex http://divine-ripples.blogspot.com/2010/05/theology-of-body-in-action-or-chastity.html It’s the strongest drive in humans so it is leveraged by businesses or by anyone who wants to get anything. Sex is not bad. In fact, it can be enjoyed without guilt.

Second is violence http://divine-ripples.blogspot.com/2010/06/video-muslim-justice-women-kicked.html I actually have a snuff post right here where you see a woman whacked literally with a hollowed block. It shows how a cult of so-called peace punishes the fairer sex for forgetting to feed a goat – at least that’s what was noted. I showed it to expose the lies about Islam; because, the father of lies is the devil. And in spiritual warfare, truth is the first casualty. I am not about to become a silent conspirator.

Third is abortion ads that made it through the media because of a technicality i.e. being part of a campaign http://divine-ripples.blogspot.com/2010/10/videos-dc-candidate-missy-smiths-ads-is.html I guess it is because the person is a public figure who had an abortion and regretted it. Perhaps, the viewers identified with her and saw what monstrosity this choice was all about – specially after seeing the babies. (Warning – the ad is graphic.)

Fourth is a social Venn diagram based on emotional dysfunction, intelligence, social ineptitude & possessiveness http://divine-ripples.blogspot.com/2010/01/social-venn-diagram-based-on-emotiional.html I guess people are interested about themselves naturally. Dale Carnegie wrote, “Talk to a man about himself and he will listen forever.”

After this elections, if the rightful winners make it, those who engaged in fraud need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law i.e. $10,000 fine & 3 years in jail.  We need to ensure that the American electoral process become a model for the world so there should be zero tolerance for fraud.  Also, we need to set the tone for 2012 otherwise the unions will just be encouraged to carry on.

I don't know any culture that relishes pain in any way, shape or form other than a subculture of S&M. But that is ill. Normal folks avoid pain and relieves it ASAP; just watch the TV ads and tally how many are pills for tummy aches or head aches or muscles aches are being promoted. I would suspect that the epidemic of obesity and sexual addictions is tied to this. People are not as gluttonous or promiscuous as much they are hurting. And food becomes an acceptable source of comfort - hence the term "comfort foods". It is certainly more virtuous and socially acceptable than booze, dope or sexual abuse.

There is another way to deal to accept pain that is not in a form of sexual deviance. It can be seen as part of the strain and rigor to achieve physical stamina. "Feel the pain" the trainers say like it's a good thing. Well it is because it is the price to pay for muscle tone and a sexier bod. In social circles, pain can be used as initiation. Remember boot camp or a training program. Pain for the sake of pain gains a Stoic value - a virtue of the ancient Greco-Roman culture of conquest and supremacy where people don't flinch even when their arm is burned because they're just as tough as nails. That same thinking goes into gang, frat or military initiations.

But if your not out there earning your wings, shield or stripes, then how does pain make sense - specially in these days of unemployment or underemployment, of infidelities and ingratitude, of illness and old age. Christian spirituality looks at it as a source of purification and penance. Penance is like punishment for sins and purification is like cleaning from imperfections. One needs to be perfect to be united with God. So, these hard times can be ways and means to prepare for heaven. Otherwise, one will have to do it in Purgatory where one has really no choice but to wait it out until it over.

This is what St. John of the Cross talks about in his classic "The Dark Night of the Soul". Here there are no consolations or good feelings from loving God. It is just raw and rancid, bitter and vile as shown in the lives of almost all the saints when they were at their lowest point. Some had happy endings like St. John Bosco who found the Pinardi shed to become the oratory or playground for his homeless youth. Others lingered in this yucky state for the rest of their lives but remaining faithful to God all the time e.g. Blessed Teresa of Calcutta - quite possibly.

Most if not everyone goes through crappy times. It feels like God has left us such that we cry with the Lord hanging on the cross, "My God, my God why have you left me?" The difference is in the love. Saints feel like hell but they accept the pain with love as an expiation for their sins and for the sins of others. Those who are not yet saints resent the pain saying, "Why me? What have I done to deserve this?"  Then they go to the 5 stages as mapped by Kubler-Ross - if they don't get stuck.

In the old school of virtues there are the advanced forms of humility namely: effacement and abnegation. Effacement means erasing your face. You don't care about the credit. You are not offended when others forget or ignore you. You have no face i.e. you no longer live, but Jesus lives in you. (Galatians 2:20) Then there is the humility of abnegation or deprecation where you see yourself for who you really are - a sinner, an imperfect selfish man, someone who spent his life for his own pleasure, greed, envy, avarice, power, praise, honors and the like. Someone who is not as loving as the incarnate Son of God. When one sees this and acknowledges it, then one accepts the bad things as just punishments and does so with love.

That is why saints are always cheerful. They feel joy in the midst of tribulations and sufferings because of this mindset. This is why the Lord taught that when we fast, we should not look glum. The same is when we're going through excruciating times. We need to embrace those times as moments of growth in holiness. Growth in holiness doesn't mean we're flying a little higher in the next level but it means loving truly i.e. loving even when it hurts. For the measure of love is love without measure and the limit of love is love without limits.  Only when we have learned to love that way are we ready to join the family of God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in their perfect communion of love.

So, feel and relish the pain as the best act of love that you can give. If you need a model, just glance at the nearest crucifix - if you don't carry one around.

Requirements for Obtaining a Plenary Indulgence on All Souls Day (Nov. 2nd)

Visit a church and pray for souls in Purgatory

Say one “Our Father” and the “Creed” in the visit to the church

Say one “Our Father” and one “Hail Mary” for the Holy Father’s intentions

Worthily receive Holy Communion (ideally on the same day if you can get to Mass)

Make a sacramental confession within a week of All Souls Day

For a plenary indulgence be free from all attachment to sin, even venial sin (otherwise, the indulgence is partial, not plenary, “full”).

The Church that hosts the seat of national political power is silent about voting Catholic

I may be wrong, so please correct me if you find some facts to the contrary.  But last Sun., I heard nothing about voting Catholic from the homily.  I would bet that none of the parishes in the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. preached about it either.

And if the archiocesan website is any indication, then we have tons of stories about how Archbishop Wuerl is going be made, sounds like the mob huh "made", made cardinal that is.  But if he will continue to be mum about the pro-abortion Democrats, then he might as well be with the mob as there is no difference with their lack of respect for life.

But don't take my word for it, here's the link http://www.adw.org/home.asp  Let me know, if there is a smidgen of direction on how to vote or how to be a Catholic is the public square.  I may have just missed it.  (Now yes, the vestments of the cardinal are nice.  Whoo-pee-doo.  Will he get the shoes from Mephistopheles?  But I digressed.)

The archdiocese is in a town of Democrats.  So, are they just trying to be nice to Democrats to save their souls i.e. this silence or political correctness is a pastoral approach.  But what if being a Democrat is being anti-Catholic?  Their platform is solidly pro-choice which is a euphemism for pro-abortion. 

So what happens is that people get a perception that it is morally responsible to vote for Democrats because, the Church is silent - disgustingly and traitorously silent if you ask me.

Iraqi officials say 52 people, including at least 30 worshipers, are dead following a bloody standoff at a Baghdad Christian church.  Iraqi forces stormed the church late Sunday, hours after militants burst into the building, taking more than 100 people inside hostage.  It is not clear how many people were killed by the militants and how many died during the rescue effort. Officials said 70 people were wounded.  Survivors say the militants entered with guns firing and immediately killed one of the priests at point-blank range.
