"The Learning" will air September 20, 2011 on PBS. Check local listings.

"The Learning" - POV 2011
by Ramona Diaz

One hundred years ago, American teachers established the English-speaking public school system of the Philippines. Now, in a striking turnabout, American schools are recruiting Filipino teachers. "The Learning" is the story of four Filipino women who reluctantly leave their families and schools to teach in Baltimore. With their increased salaries, they hope to transform their families' lives back in their impoverished country. But the women also bring idealistic visions of the teacher's craft and of life in America, which soon collide with Baltimore's tough realities. A co-production of CineDiaz and ITVS in association with The Center for Asian American Media, with funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and American Documentary

“How to Raise a Juvenile Delinquent"

The sheriff’s office in a Texas city once published a list of rules titled “How to Raise a Juvenile Delinquent"  as:

1. From infancy, give a child everything he wants. He'll believe that the world owes him a living.

2. Pick up after your child.  He'll learn to pass his duties on others.

3. Side with him always even against authorities. Tell him they're prejudiced against him because he is a “free spirit” and is never wrong. This will make him disregard anyone who corrects him or limits his behavior.

4. Prepare for grief as your child will end up in jail or have a messed up life. A child who never hears the word no has a limited understanding of the word yes.

In fact, St. John Bosco’s “No” is preferred by the kids to Bl. Michael Rua’s “Yes”. St. John Bosco takes the time to listen to the request. Then he kindly explains why the request is not good for the boy. So, the young feels loved despite the rejection or the limitation. ( Bl. Michael Rua is cold by temperament. So, his “yes” can appear to be impersonal. But he is a holy man.)

Approved Sex Ed for 5 year olds DECADENT

Excerpt from Mail Online
Explicit cartoons, films and books have been cleared for use to teach sex education to schoolchildren as young as five.  A disturbing dossier exposes a wide range of graphic resources recommended for primary school lessons.  The shocking material – promoted by local councils and even the BBC – teaches youngsters about adult language and sexual intercourse.

Commentary:
From the pedagogical perspective, one will find the following items to be problematic:
1.)  The definition of prostitute is so non-judgmental like it's just another job.  One can define nanny along the same breath with absolutely no qualitative distinction.  Might as well as add that to the career handbook.
2.)  The description of straight or gay is again so benign, so innocent sugggesting normalcy  - no different from the hetesexuality.
3.)  The description of an orgasm sounds like fun to explore.  And it spells how just how to get one: by yourself or with your playmate.  If you were a kid, wouldn't you want to experience this pleasure?
4.)  The ways of copulation with balloons and space hopper suggests that it is an activity as innocent as child's play.  So, kids will then ask what do you want to play:  tag, dress up or getting it together.
5.)  The definiton of masturbation and intercourse is so clinical with no moral qualification.  Just another activity like eating or napping.

If parents find this offensive or corrupting, they can always opt out their child.  However, the majority would probably stay and one can foresee the sexually charged climate that will result from this.  Worse, there will be two moralities facing the child: one from State where everything goes and one from parents.  It now becomes a battle for the heart and mind of the child to gain his soul.  But why is the government even going here? Here is a motive.

With Obamacare funded already at $105 Billion dollars, kids can go to Planned Parenthood and get an abortion that is already paid for by our taxes (expect them to rise - a lot).  The school will even drive them there and it will be done in all confidentiality (thanks to those privacy laws that led to the legalization of abortion).  And when purity goes, the entire character goes.  When the child has no character, then what else is there left that has value?  (While the program cited is in the UK, the Obama administration has done similar things.  Just go to the blog posts under "Education".)

And these evils as are old as the hills.  God condems these through Isaiah saying, "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter." (Isaiah 5:20)   And the Lord Jesus points out that the culpability is worse when it involves children as He warns, "And if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around his neck." (Mk 9:42)

Price of higher education. Cost of higher ignorance. & Funding college now - 529.

There’s a lot of noise about the higher education bubble – like it’s not worth going to college anymore.

Though the price of education is expensive, the price of ignorance is even more. So, there are quantitative and qualitative differences. There’s the pay and considerations for advancement but there are other things i.e. perspective, attitude and confidence.

All things being equal, the college grad will be given more opportunities for entry and advancement because those credentials reflect certain qualities e.g. mental ability, diligence, discipline, industry among others.

Going back to the bubble, I think it is not in the community and state colleges because those are relatively inexpensive. And the ivy leagues will still be worth it depending on the program because if you’re a Wharton MBA or a Harvard Law graduate, then all the Fortune 500 companies will roll out the red carpet and pay you more than enough to recoup your investment. The bubble is in expensive private colleges or programs that are not that marketable.

Bottom line, if one can afford the time then there are economical ways to fund higher education e.g. grants, loans, scholarships and savings programs. An example of a saving program is the 529 account where contributions can be deducted from state taxes and the benefits can be transferred to another beneficiary – just in case your kid gets a scholarship and you can give it to someone else. The concept is like an IRA but even better because one can purchase a 2 or 4 year degree program at the current rate to use 18 years from now. Also, in the 529 program, one can opt to invest the money in a funds and hope that it grows as fast as the cost of education and not have any financial meltdowns that can wipe away the savings. I would go with paying for the tuition at today’s rate and having that program ready – to shield it from the market volatilities. I guess the risk there is if the state goes bankrupt. Anyway, this post is meant as a guide or pointer to explore the 529 programs. It varies by the state.

(If this helps, kindly say a prayer for my family. Thanks and God bless.)

These guys with degrees - Frs. Jenkins & McBrien, Sr. Keehan know so much just like the devil who may know even more (cfr. angelic knowledge). But information without faith bring disobedience, sin and perdition.  Truly intelligent people become humbler the more they know because, they realize how ignorant they were before. Jenkins & Keehan with all their degrees have not really grown.

Does due diligence require sending your kid to a private school?

Ten years ago, I carried him with one arm and anticipated his first word. Ten years from now, I’ll probably drop him off in college and help him lug his crate to his dorm. And then it’ll be practically over. Except for Thanksgiving and Christmas, he’ll be out there on his own with his life and whatever I’ve done to shape it.

With this in mind, I cherish every minute that I spend with him these days and try not to yell at him for every little flaw. Instead of ordering him around, I give him a hand with his chores and I ask him to ride with me so that we can have a conversation. That way, I get to understand what led him to punch his 7 year old sister the night before.

I am also spending my retirement savings on his schooling as I enrolled him in Catholic school this year. I figured, how can I enjoy my retirement if my son turns out to be a bum. He is just in middle school but I think it’s time to take him out of public schools. It’s the environment. Even if I opt out of having him take sex-ed, everyone else will be talking about how they did it. As a former educator, I am well aware of the tremendous impact of peers on kids his age.

Some people say that he’ll be exposed to that anyway even in Catholic schools. Even if that is true, the exposure is limited. It won’t be the culture but rather a deviation; in public school, it is the atmosphere. A speaker in my wife’s convention this year shared how he got lost in a public school restroom and found kids huddled together watching others engage in oral sex.

Others think that I am being snobbish and elitist but putting my kid there. They don’t have a clue that it is about faith not elegance or prestige. Still others consider that purity is overrated. They say just teach my kids about protected sex so they don’t get pregnant or masturbation is natural and is really no big deal. I guess they can only speak of what they know. Talking to them about purity, innocence and chastity is like casting pearls to hogs.  Then there's the all time favorite, "I went to public school and I turned out alright."  I am not much of a diplomat so all I can say to that is, "I want my son to turn out better than myself ... or yourself for that matter.  The mission that I have from God is to make saints out of my children and my wife.  Saints."
To St. John Bosco who produced almost a hundred canonized saints over the past 100 years, purity is everything. A chaste mind, heart and body is a practical submission of oneself to God, a faith lived out and the beginning of the love of God. The world and the tempter dismiss these as little things because, that is how people fall - little by little.

I have 5 kids. Catholic middle school is 6 grand a year and high school is 13 grand. We’ll take it one day at a time as the Lord’s prayer asks only for , “... our daily bread…”. And even if I end up never retiring in this life and shopping with food stamps at the end, then I’ll just retire in heaven. St. John Bosco used to say that.

Though I know I can’t shelter them all their lives, I sure will do everything I can so that at the end, I will have no regrets. I would have gone all out at this war for my children's salvation.  There won't any "if only I did this"  Besides, God will never be outdone in fidelity and generosity so who knows?

Study shows 70% for abstinence education. Obama admin blocks release of findings.

A taxpayer-funded study that indicates parental and adolescent support of abstinence education is not being released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), as it does not support the administration’s objective – or that of vocal “safe sex” activists – of eliminating all abstinence-education funding.  The study shows that:
  • 70 percent of parents agreed with the statement: “It is against your values for your adolescents to have sexual intercourse before marriage.
  • 70 percent of parents agreed with the statement: “Having sexual intercourse is something only married people should do.”
  • Adolescents had similar responses for the two questions.
For more details, go to http://www.citizenlink.com/2010/08/obama-administration-blocks-release-of-pivotal-hhs-abstinence-study/
The question is why does it oppose abstinence-education.  Here's a disturbing  answer.

Video: Successful school experiment (not Obama scholars)

There is hope for public education in the US as shown by the New Orleans experiment. It boils down to a somewhat privatization of the system that forces quality to thrive in a competitive system.

Video description:
Before hurricane Katrina ravaged the city in 2005, New Orleans had one of the worst performing public school districts in the nation. Katrina forced nearly a million people to leave their homes and caused almost $100 billion in damages. To an already failing public school system, the storm seemed to provide the final deathblow. But then something amazing happened. In the wake of Katrina, education reformers decided to seize the opportunity and start fresh with a system based on choice.

Today, New Orleans has the most market-based school system in the US. Sixty percent of New Orleans students currently attend charter schools, test scores are up, and talented and passionate educators from around the country are flocking to New Orleans to be a part of the education revolution. It's too early to tell if the New Orleans experiment in school choice will succeed over the long term, but for the first time in decades people are optimistic about the future of New Orleans schools.

Approximately 10 minutes. Produced by Paul Feine; hosted by Nick Gillespie; shot by Alex Manning and Dan Hayes; edited by Alex Manning.
