Great ideas, best intentions and government mandates - in history and at present.

If video fails, go to http://divine-ripples.blogspot.com/2010/12/great-idea-best-intentions-and.html

Video description:  All actions have unanticipated side effects, but government acting through regulation or legislation is particularly adept at creating disastrous unintended consequences.  Great Moments in Unintended Consequences takes a look at three instances of epic government facepalm: Osborne Reef, Corn Ethanol Subsidies, and a particular clause in ObamaCare that is already doing more harm than good.

Proof that Obamacare uses tax dollars for abortions from the 2000 page text, chapter & verse.

I ran into a fan of Keehan who defended her position that there is no federal funding of abortion.  She also chided us for being ignorant.
Here's proof that Keehan is naive and ingenuous about the federal funding of abortion in Obamacare.
http://www.examiner.com/x-49886-Houston-Religion--Politics-Examiner~y2010m6d7-Health-care-reform-act-funds-abortion
and
on page 779 of the 906 page bill, in Section 1301 (1) the bill specifically states the following:"‘‘
(1) IN GENERAL.—A State may elect to prohibit abortion coverage in qualified health plans offered through an Exchange in such State if such State enacts a law to provide for such prohibition."

Excerpts:  How the act funds elective abortions
The Act uses a "segregation of funds" policy to subsidize health insurance plans that cover elective abortions. These subsidized health insurance plans are designed to make coverage available to millions of Americans who currently lack coverage. Each purchaser of a subsidized health insurance plan that includes elective abortion coverage is required by the Act to make two premium payments per month. One payment goes into a fund that pays for abortion coverage.

Thus, persons with subsidized plans that cover abortion will receive abortions paid for by the premiums of everyone enrolled in said plans. This "segregation of funds" method clearly reverses long-standing federal policy of not using federal monies for any part of a subsidized health benefits package that covers elective abortions. The federal government's health insurance subsidies will expand abortion coverage and make abortions more accessible.

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) manages the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP). The Act authorizes the OPM to contract with private insurers to provide coverage to federal employees. The Act requires the OPM Director to ensure that in each state there is at least one plan available that covers elective abortions. Other available plans may still fund elective abortions using the "segregation of funds" method described above.

The Act further appropriates $7 billion over five years to create a "Community Health Center Fund". This was expanded to $9.5 billion in the budget reconciliation bill passed March 25 (Public Law 111-152). These funds are appropriated outside the bounds of annual appropriations bills normally within the scope of the Hyde amendment and other similar riders.
The only specific limitation on these funds within the Act relates to "school-based" health centers. While these centers will dispense contraceptive drugs and devices to minors, the "school-based" health center funds may not be used to pay for abortions. Otherwise, there is nothing in the Act to restrict health centers funded by the Act from paying for abortions, and it isn't clear whether "school-based" centers may use federal funds for abortion referrals.

Mental Reservation of Sr. Carol Keehan. It's like a lie.

Sr. Carol Keehan declares, "We were in complete accord with our bishops and our church that abortion is a grave evil. There is no justification for abortion, and we would not ever have supported this bill if we thought it funded abortion." at a gathering of Catholics supporting Obama.

This comment is a gross misrepresentation of her support for the Health Care Bill or a very carefully worded message to state her decision to disobey the bishops on this matter.  Despite the bishops' admonition, she relied on her "thoughts" and deemed the bishops wrong.

Archbishop Joseph Naumann's published response to Sister Keehan's denial of abortion funding in the bill: "I find this statement by Sister Keehan either incredibly naïve or disingenuous. Either the bill permits previously prohibited government funding of abortion or not. This is not a technicality."

To show who is right, read http://www.detnews.com/article/20100427/OPINION03/4270348/1022/Health-law--economy-shape-family-planning#ixzz0mPd6OAoH

Excerpt:  "An early sign of health care reform's impact is Planned Parenthood's decision to open a new Oakland County clinic within the next 18 months, adding to 15 locations, including Detroit, Warren and Livonia. Unlike other Detroit area centers, the new location is likely to include abortion services.

[Planned Parenthood President Cecile] Richards and Lori Lamerand, executive director of Planned Parenthood of Mid and South Michigan, are ramping up for a boom in birth control and other reproductive services -- what Lamerand calls "an onslaught" of women poised to gain new access to reproductive health care."

We can speculate on the nun's motives with her false statement.  Is it to give the impression that Catholics can support Obama and the Democrats?  Probably.  But whatever it is, there was no confusion about the direction given by the bishops back then.  And she chose to ignore their guidance to the peril and death of many more unborn children.

2 Corinthians 11:14 "And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light."

Dissident nuns support of Obamacare exaggerated. Faithful nuns oppose et. al.

Mama (Mary) says, "Knock you out!"

The LCWR, a coalition of liberal nuns came out with a statement supporting Obama's bill despite the bishops' objections and teachings to the contrary.  There was sensationalized by the MSM only to be disproven upon close examination.  Go to http://weeklystandard.com/blogs/media-malpractice-washpost-reports-all-59000-nuns-us-support-obamacare  or click here.  These dissenters are the same ones who oppose the Vatican inspection.

The faithful nuns represented by CMSWR, the Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious,  issued their own statement that opposed Obamacare.  See below:

March 18, 2010 - In a March 15th statement, Cardinal Francis George, OMI, of Chicago, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, spoke on behalf of the United States Bishops in opposition to the Senate's version of the health care legislation under consideration because of its expansion of abortion funding and its lack of adequate provision for conscience protection. Recent statements from groups like Network, the Catholic Health Association and the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) directly oppose the Catholic Church's position on critical issues of health care reform.

The Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious, the second conference of Major Superiors of Women Religious in the United States, believes the Bishops' position is the authentic teaching of the Catholic Church.

Protection of life and freedom of conscience are central to morally responsible judgment. We join the bishops in seeking ethically sound legislation.

Mother Mary Quentin Sheridan, R.S.M.
President
On behalf of the Membership of the Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious

In my opinion, the liberal nuns have to be taken to task for misleading the faithful in such a crucial matter.  Their bad example and infidelity should no longer be tolerated.  These misguided souls need to retract their statements, repair the damage of their past offenses and sin no more.  But since this is not the first time, I doubt if they will do that.  So, we need to stop donating to their orders and causes and let them know why.  If they won't stop, then they have no business being a nun;  they should pack their bags and go home.  We don't want their false teachings and scandals.  We may picket their houses to show them what abortion is;  they might think the fetus is just a glob of blood.

We can also contact the bishops where they operate with that same message and request him to expel them from his diocese.  We can contact their superiors at Rome and even the Vatican office for nuns.  Something needs to be done because, they will continue if they are not checked.  See what damage that has done in the past and being now and will be done later.

Incredible and abhorrent.

Update: From the dissenters, I cross referenced their orders with a list of Catholic religious institutions from Wikipedia. After removing the duplicates, I can only find 25 groups among the 323 orders listed; 11 do not appear in the list.

Video: Sen. Paul Ryan. Healthcare reform needs a sound fix.

Everyone wants to fix the insurance problem. But a solution that is filled with fraudulent accounting does not inspire confidence. Paul Ryan presents CBO numbers and their ramifications. Why not work with the GOP for a real solution - not one that is bogus.  (Source:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPxMZ1WdINs  or click here.)

A truthful and unbiased source, imho, is the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.  Here is their website devoted on this matter.   USCCB teachings on healthcare http://www.usccb.org/healthcare/

Issues of Life & Conscience in HealthCare Reform:  A Comparison of the House and Senate Bills  Source:  http://www.usccb.org/healthcare/life_conscience.pdf

by Steve Mosher from Population Research Institute
Ignoring the polls and the House of Representatives, President Obama is pushing ahead with a health care bill that will force Americans to pay for abortions. He has proposed what he calls a "targeted set of changes" to the Senate-passed bill, which have the effect of making a bad bill for babies even worse. (An 11-page summary is available on the White House website here).

Bear in mind that the Senate bill (H.R. 3590) already promotes abortion in multiple ways, making it the most pro-abortion legislation since Roe v. Wade. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), a cautious critic at best, posted a study of the anti-life provisions of the Senate bill that ran no fewer than thirteen (13) pages.

Now comes Obama's version, ladling on $11 billion for "Community Health Centers." Planned Parenthood will be the beneficiary of much of this money, as the President helps his friends at the abortion organization get even richer off our tax dollars.

Obama also wants to subsidize private health insurance that covers abortion, and to mandate that even non-subsidized plans to cover abortion, in effect forcing all of us to pay for someone else's abortion.

Video: Reagan's analysis of socialized medicine amazingly applicable and alarming

If you saw the Health Care Summit today and considered the arguments together with the emotional appeals, you would be amazed at how this 1961 speech addresses the very same drama with some alarming implications.  I yield the next 4 minutes to the late President Ronald Reagan for this warning.

Source:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnLa1BvtaxM  or click here

Video Description:
Ronald Reagan speaks out against socialized medicine. A modernly relevant portion of a 1961 LP recorded by Ronald Reagan. In this recording, Reagan warned that socialized medicine would curtail Americans' freedom and that "pretty soon your son won't decide when he's in school, where he will go or what he will do for a living. He will wait for the government to tell him."   Ronald Reagan clearly unfolds how social medicine encroaches upon Americans' freedoms. Whether deliberately advancing socialization under the guise of humanitarian effort, or simply instituting another social program with reduced individual freedoms following in its wake, socialized medicine will lead to the erosion of every American's God given rights and freedoms.

Videos: Sex for abortion & death panel support in "healthcare reform"

Bishops still oppose it because of abortion provisions.
While the U.S. Senate appears poised to finally pass a health care reform bill before Christmas, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops remains opposed to the Senate version on the ground that its limits on abortion funding do not go far enough. According to statements issued last Friday and Saturday by the Bishops, the Manager's Amendment (full text) to H.R. 3590 "does not seem to allow purchasers who exercise freedom of choice or of conscience to 'opt out' of abortion coverage in federally subsidized health plans that include such coverage. Instead it will require purchasers of such plans to pay a distinct fee or surcharge which is extracted solely to help pay for other people's abortions." The Bishops stressed that their criteria for acceptable health care reform includes three moral criteria: "respect for life and conscience; affordability for the poor; and access to much-needed basic health care for immigrants."  Details at:  Religion Clause: Bishops Continue To Oppose Senate Health Care Bill-- Looking At Why

Others oppose it because the Senate Democrats declare a super-majority of senators will be needed to overrule any regulation imposed by the Death Panels.   Senator Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) pointed out some rather astounding language in the Senate health care bill during floor remarks tonight. First, he noted that there are a number of changes to Senate rules in the bill--and it's supposed to take a 2/3 vote to change the rules. And then he pointed out that the Reid bill declares on page 1020 that the Independent Medicare Advisory Board cannot be repealed by future Congresses:  More at: http://www.redstate.com/erick/2009/12/21/we-are-no-longer-a-nation-of-laws-senate-sets-up-requirement-for-super-majority-to-ever-repeal-obamacare/

In other words: the issue Jim DeMint raised on the floor of the Senate last night. Why did the authors of the legislation want to specially protect the Independent Medicare Advisory Board by making it difficult for future Congresses to legislate in that area? Because the heart of the bill is the attempt to get control of our health care permanently in the hands of federal bureaucrats, who would allegedly know better than doctors and patients what’s good for them, and who would cut access to care and the quality of care so there’s more money left over for various big government liberal social programs.    More at: http://www.weeklystandard.com/weblogs/TWSFP/2009/12/kristol_it_could_still_go_down.asp

But if you just go along and support the so-called health care bill, then they might sleep with you. It's a new fallacy: argumentum ad fornicatum.
